"Wake up, Neo." Man, do you remember that moment in the Matrix when Neo is startled awake after those jacked-up FBI-lookin' guys capture him, toss him in a room, melt his fucking mouth shit and literally "bug" him. Ugh, just thinking about that bug forcing itself through his navel still makes us cringe. It was all SO bazaar - especially in 1999.
Yeah, the original The Matrix was from 1999. Feel so long ago, right?
Anyway, after that intense and surreal scene we all took a simultaneous breath, but Neo's screen quickly changes and reads, "The Matrix has you." No Way! "Follow the white rabbit." What white rabbit? "Knock, Knock, Neo." Quickly there's a knock at the door.
Holy. Friggin. Shit.
We're then meeting five people, one of which is named Choi. Choi hands Neo two thousand dollars and Neo closes the door, leafs through several discs he's hidden in a book and hands Choi his purchase. WTF? What is going on with this man? Two names. Two lives. And perhaps two worlds.
Anyway, Choi comments on Neo's haggard appearance and asks Dujour if they should take Neo with them for the evening. She replies "Definitely," and turns toward Choi revealing a white rabbit tattoo on her shoulder. Despite Neo punking out earlier with Morpheus over the phone during his attempted escape, he chooses to follow leading to Trinity and a whole chaotic and insane journey we've all come to know and love.
This isn't the only time "the whole rabbit" is mentioned in the Matrix. When offering Neo a choice of pills, Morpheus again alludes to Alicein Wonderland, saying, "take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland...and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." Morpheus compares Neo's potential experience with the Matrix to the experience of Alice due to the unbelievable nature of what's to come.
So, the white rabbit reference in The Matrix is more than Dujour's tattoo, it's a metaphor for following one's curiosity to an impossible land. What makes this metaphor especially interesting is that Neo is, in a way, already in Wonderland. He is actually about to emerge from the rabbit hole… and boy is he in for some amazing shit.
