As we well know, in 2006 things went downhill for planet Pluto when NASA findings prompted the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to redefine what it means to be a planet. It was then that the IAU declared a planet must be 1) a celestial body that orbits the sun, 2) round or nearly round, and 3) "clear the neighborhood" around its orbit. This new definition made by the IAU reclassified Pluto as a "Dwarf Planet" and a "Trans-Neptunian Object." It was from this moment that schoolchildren, parents, teachers and the whole GD internet FREAKED THE FUCK OUT!
However, there may be hope for Pluto to become a planet once again. According to Philip Metzger, "It's a sloppy definition. They didn't say what they meant by clearing their orbit. If you take that literally, then there are no planets, because no planet clears its orbit." Additionally, new NASA findings are uncovering there is more to Pluto than originally thought. Not only is it bigger than previously documented, but new NASA photographs show a vast nitrogen glacier, ice mountains, canyons, cliffs, craters and more. It's likely not enough to classify Pluto as a plant again, but it never hurts to hope!
