According to a 2013 article in Smithsonian Magazine it was still raking in a cool $500k per year for the group (good for them!) And here we are almost 30 years later and Geico just had to go back and put it in our heads again (while maybe also making us hungry). In their typical fashion, they took something that made almost no sense and has nothing to do with insurance and they shoe-horned it into a commercial....and people love it. Something about Tag Team cheering you on in the kitchen to make a hefty bowl of ice cream just made people happy, apparently, and we almost immediately go requests for a T-shirt to pay proper homage.
